Luke 19:41-43: 41 “What do you want Me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” 43 Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.
In Luke 18:41, as Jesus is approached by the blind man, He asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” This question, while straightforward, opens a deeper dialogue about need, desire, and faith. The blind man responds, “Lord, I want to see.” His request is simple yet profound, encapsulating his physical need and, symbolically, his desire for spiritual insight and clarity. This exchange emphasizes the active role of faith in the healing process. Because of this man and his faith in what Jesus can do, he was delivered, and recovered his sight.
We sometimes sing that old song “Amazing Grace.” The first verse goes, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me!” I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind, but now I see!”. When I read this passage of scripture, that song always comes to mind, because I see myself in this man! I used to be blind. Life happened to me, and through further study, my eyes were opened. I began to see what my relationship with Jesus should really look like. In baptism and by growing my relationship with Him even further, my sight has gotten even closer to 20/20.
Do we see ourselves like this blind man, just waiting to gain sight? Do we think we see clearly, when really we couldn’t be any more blind? Have we been made able to see by Jesus?
I think back to the “redemption” stories I have heard. You can ask many people who once felt lost. They were consumed by the world. They will tell you that, until Jesus, they had no direction. They did not know what they were living for! They would go along in life and struggle, toil, and trudge along for no apparent reason… until they found Jesus. Now they have a reason for the strife. Now they know why they are doing this thing that we call “life”.
Jesus brings meaning to life. Jesus brings sight. When we recognize WHERE we are, when we recognize WHO we are, and WHAT Jesus can do, we will be delivered by Him. He will give us direction. He will give us sight. It just takes faith, and a willingness to ask. You will see grace when you see Jesus. You will see salvation when you see Jesus. You will see clearly when you see Jesus. It just takes Him to help you see clearly.
When you seek Him, when you seek for your sight to be revealed, it will be given to you. When you seek direction, He is always waiting to be found. May you seek Him, and seek to make your sight as close to 20/20 as it can be.
