I watched the TV show “How I Met Your Mother” with my wife a few nights ago, as is our nightly custom. One of the jokes in the show caught my attention. The main character (Ted) was going to make a bad decision in the present. However, he decided not to follow through because it would affect the future for him. His best friend then said “Let future Ted worry about that!”.
When this was said, I remembered what Jesus said in Matthew 6:34. He stated, “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself.” Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Jesus knew that not everything needed serious worry. We (as Americans in a moving culture) stress about everything. We stress about investments, retirements, jobs, even the outfits we wear!
But we (as Christians) need to remember the words of Jesus. Remember what He says just a few verses earlier, establishing this motif of stress in the sermon on the mount. He said that God cares for the birds of the air (Matthew 6:26). How much more will He care for you?
Jesus said that worrying will not add a single hour to your life. He implied through this that it (worry) might, in fact, do the opposite (Matthew 6:27).
God clothes the grass in lilies. Even King Solomon in all his glory was not as beautiful as this (Matthew 6:39-30)!
Do not worry about these things. Trust in God. Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and ALL OF THESE THINGS will be added to you. God provides for His people. This is a promise of Jesus that we need to take comfort in.
Seek God out. Seek His Kingdom and Righteousness. Do not worry over food, drink, or clothes. God has you covered!
As Christians, maybe sometimes we just need to let future us worry about it. Because we have what the world doesn’t- the cure for any and all anxieties.
